Why Chuck Won’t Leave — Another Data Point

| January 26, 2008

Apparently Allegedly the difference in Chuck Rosenthal’s pension if he leaves now and if he leaves after completing his second term is something on the order of $90,000. A year. [Update: So far I have been unable to confirm the truth of this allegation.]

Why Chuck Won’t Leave

| January 26, 2008

Hypothetical question: If Chuck Rosenthal resigns, who is in charge of the DA’s office? Answer: First Assistant Bert Graham. For how long? Until governor Rick Perry appoints a new DA. Well, who does he appoint? Maybe Pat Lykos. So? So whoever Perry appoints goes into the primary with an advantage. Again: so? So the general [...]

Harris County DA’s Diversity Policy is “Pretty Much Ignored”

| January 16, 2008

The general counsel for the Harris County DA’s office says that the DA’s operations manual provision related to diversity and equal employment, which has been policy since 1993, is “pretty much ignored as far as our actual hiring practices are concerned.”

Done

| January 11, 2008

I’m declaring Chuck Rosenthal “done”. Sure, he can hold on to his office and his salary for a while. But the Texas Attorney General has opened an investigation into Chuck’s alleged misuse of county property, and that sort of thing is seldom good for one’s career in public service. At some point soon he’s going [...]

Chuck to be Investigated?

| January 9, 2008

Harris County Judge Ed Emmett (not a real judge, but the county’s chief officer) has called for the Texas Attorney General to investigate Harris County D.A. Chuck Rosenthal. The Harris County DA’s Office at Work

A little peek into a world that most of us never get to see. Channel 11 got more of Harris County DA Chuck Rosenthal’s emails, including some between Chuck and the husband of a Republican candidate for D.A. (how cozy!). Ever wonder why Bill Clinton was “the closest thing to having a black man as [...]

Republican Party Disagrees . . .

| January 4, 2008

. . . and is therefore wrong. Never go in against Troy McKinney when an election is on the line! Channel 2 News picked up the story of Chuck Rosenthal’s defective withdrawal from the Republican primary for Harris County District Attorney, but the other local news venues showed little interest; a reporter told me, “Party [...]

How is an Election Like a Marriage?

| January 4, 2008

Harris County DA Chuck Rosenthal, who got in trouble with the Republican Party for writing love notes (in the ’00s) to his secretary, with whom he had an affair (in the 80s), is out of the primary, then ADA Kelly Siegler is in, then Chuck’s back in again? Not exactly; he’s just not sure what [...]

Chuck May Not Be Out; Kelly May Not Be In

Here’s section 145.001 of the Texas Election Code: § 145.001. METHOD FOR WITHDRAWAL AS CANDIDATE. (a) To withdraw from an election, a candidate whose name is to appear on the ballot must request that the candidate’s name be omitted from the ballot.(b) To be effective, a withdrawal request must: (1) be in writing and be [...]
