Mark, the Chron has produced some good work over the years, such as its coverage of Hurricane Ike and the Sam Kent investigation. However, when the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals -- no protector of criminal defendants' rights generally -- finds that the Chron-led media coverage of Jeff Skilling's trial created a presumption of community prejudice against Skilling, it is clear that the purpose of the Chron's coverage of controversial legal matters is about something other than accuracy and public education.

One of my favorite law school professor's favorite refrain was that lawyers are nothing more than "overpaid careful readers of text." Most of the lawyers my law school graduated are just that, I like to think I'm a little bit more.
